IPhone 4 16GB/32GB VERSUS IPhone 3GS 8GB

Hey techno friends,
Today I will be showing both the up side and down side to the two apple creations. Since you are reading your post, your questions would be "which one should I get?", "is the IPhone 4G antenna issue fixed?", which has a better screen/function?" or "i'm just plain bored, entertain me!"
Without further a do, let us begin this year's greatest technology battle!
This review will be separated into the following sections to best determine the winner of the war! The sections will be: Hardware (weight, size, processor, screen sizes, any portion that can be touched), Screen Display, Camera, Functions, and the "X-factor" (Iphone 4: Issues with the antenna.)

1. HARDWARE

First off, Lets talk about the Hardware aspects of the two handheld devices. Let us for look at the IPhone 4 16GB/32GB. This phone uses the new A4 processor which is quite faster than the IPhone 3GS's processor, the 600MHz, Cortex-A8 architecture. It weights, 137 grams which is approx. 4.8oz with the dimensions of 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm compared to the 135 grams (approx. 4.76oz) with the dimensions of 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm the IPhone 3GS processes. This shows that the IPhone 4 is a little slimmer than the 3GS but weights 2 grams (0.04oz) more.
As you can see, The IPhone 4 has a more linear shape compared to the 3GS' curved back. The IPhone 3GS gives the hand a more "fit" feeling as it fits into the palm, but since the IPhone 4 has a linear back, it may not feel "as good" when comparing the 2 devices' comfortableness. This does not play a major role in the selection of which Phone is "better" but certainly plays a part.

It should also be noted that, although, the 2 devices' screen size are similar but the resolution is much different. We will not go into much detail into that because it will be on section 3 of this review but it should be kept in mind that both screens are 3.5 inches.

One of the most changed hardware aspects of the devices is the battery life. Apple has constructed a battery for the IPhone 4 that will allow it to be used for a longer time compared to it's previous generations. To generally compare the battery life of the 2 devices, we will be using the talk time on 3G and 2G, WiFi time, audio time, and video time. When using the phones to talk on 3G, the IPhone 4 will support up to 7 hours while the 3GS will support up to 5 hours. It can be seen that the difference in talk time on 3G is 2 hours and the difference is also 2 hours when they are both on 2G. The IPhone 4 would be able to be used for 14 hours while the IPhone 3GS would be able to be used for 12 hours. This may not be a significant difference, but when you have a emergency, every minute of battery life counts! As for Wifi, The IPhone 4 will be able to sustain a WiFi time of 10 hours while the IPhone 3GS for 9 hours. Again, not a significant amount but time does count. Audio is one of the biggest concern and where the difference is also the greatest. This IPhone 3GS will be able to maintain a 30 hours audio time but the IPhone 4 greatly succeeds that with 40 hours of audio time. Both the video times are the same with 10 hours before the battery time runs out. Therefore, the battery on the 4 was fixed and greatly succeeds that battery life of its previous generation by a notable amount.
The IPhone currently comes in the models of 16GB and 32GB in the color black or white while the 3GS comes in 8GB models with, also, the colors black and white.

below is a chart that summarizes the topics that I have covered on the Hardware aspects of the phones.

It can be seen that the IPhone 4 might be a little heavier than the 3GS, but is clearly slimmer, and has a better battery life. I hear-by declare the IPhone as the winner of the Hardware battle!

WINNER: IPHONE 4

2. SCREEN DISPLAY

The IPhone 4 has a screen display of 960 by 640 while the 3GS has a screen display of 480 by 320. Let's look at the IPhone 3GS first. Since the resolution is 480 by 320, it means that the ppi (pixels per inch) is roughly around 163, while the IPhone 4 has a ppi of 326! This goes to show that for every pixel on every inch on the IPhone 3GS' 3.5 multitasking screen, there is double the amount of the IPhone 4's screen. For those that don't understand the world of technology, ppi is the amount of pixels on every inch of the screen or object, and therefore, the higher the amount of pixels per inch, the better the display quality.

The IPhone 3GS has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on the screen while the IPhone 4 has this coating on both the back and front of the device. Oleophobic coating is basically an oil resistant coating, to protect the phone from natural finger oil or skin oil from your face while talking on the phone. This will also mean that there will not be smudges and "less" fingerprints when using the device's hand touch features.
Not only does the IPhone 4 have a 960 by 640 resolution, it also has retina display which further enhances the image/picture quality of the phone! The retina display is a new feature that was added to the new IPhone 4 as well as the IPod touch 4th generation. Due to the retina display's pixel density being extremely high, our eyes are unable to distinguish individual pixels which causes the images and apps on the IPhone 4 look more crisp and sharp compared to those of the IPhone 3GS. Below is a comparison of the two's image quality.

Crapper one: IPhone 3GS (Top)
Better one: IPhone 4 (Bottom)

It can clearly be seen that the IPhone 4 is on a roll and is truly better than its past generation's counterparts!
Thus, I will have to, once again, declare the IPhone 4 the winner of our screen display battle!

WINNER: IPHONE 4!

3. CAMERA

One of the most noticeable difference and changes between these two generations of IPhone is the camera.
The IPhone 3GS may be equipped with 3 mega-pixel, tap to focus camera, but it is nothing compared to the IPhone 4's state-of-the-art 5 mega-pixel, tap to focus camera with LED flash to make those photos in the night so much better!

Another noticeable difference is the video recording option. The 3GS uses VGA (video graphics array) at 30 fps (frames per second) with audio, while the IPhone 4 uses HD 720p recording at 30 frames per second equipped with high quality audio! To put these video recording in comparison, below is a link which compares the video recording of the IPhone 3GS and the IPhone 4!

Not only does the IPhone 4's back camera succeeds the IPhone 3GS but the front camera on the IPhone 4 is not slack in the park. It has the ability to both record and capture images at VGA quality and 30 frames per second. Although it does not have a LED flash light, it is still useful for those who wish to take pictures of themselves but fail at the art known as "camwhoring".

This is a no "brainer" as the IPhone 4 clearly crushes and pulverizes the IPhone 3GS and enforces the idea that the IPhone 4 is better than the IPhone 3GS in every way possible known to man and even various animals!

WINNER: IPHONE 4

4. FUNCTIONS

Enough is said about the functions of the Apple creations. We all know that the IPhone 3GS is able to play music, capture videos and take photos, surf the web, use for messaging, game apps such as tap tap, and the used for a phone. We clearly know this and if you really don't, then I don't know why the heck you are reading this post.

Aside from what we know, the IPhone 4 possesses all of these functions and much much more! We all know that the winner of this will be, without a doubt, the IPhone 4 but lets give the 3GS a fighting chance and a chance for me to discuss some of the new features added to the IPhone 4!

We already know about the new Retina display so I will not bother wasting your time with talking about this, but another feature that was added to the new Apple creation is something known as "facetime". This application allows an IPhone 4 user to video call another IPhone 4 user or IPod touch 4th generation over WiFi. This means that it will not cost you any minutes to make this video call and using both the front and back camera, your partner can see everything that you are doing! Isn't this neat? It sure is! Think about it, if you can't be somewhere such as your best friend's birthday party in person, at least you can be there in virtual reality!

Another new feature added by Apple is the Imovie application. This app. allows you to create videos on the go and with a small price of $4.99 from the appl store, you can be capturing unforgettable and unbelievable moments and converting them to make a video right on the spot. After this, you can even decide to publish this onto youtube to share the laughter with others and this goes to show that this application is worth buying and perfect for the IPhone 4's 720p HD recording function.

Now back to where we were, the features on the IPhone 3GS is a ant compared to a human when compared to the IPhone 4. I think that everyone knows who the winner is now!

WINNER: IPHONE 4

5. X-FACTOR (Antenna issues!)

It is now widely known that the IPhone 4 has reception issues and holding it the wrong way will cause you to lose signal when calling. Rumor has it that this only happens when you hold the Phone with your left hand and squeezes with a lot of pressure, surely you will not do this. This problem has been causing the engineers at Apple to scratch their heads and is now called the "death grip".

Is this really such a problem that will cause you to not buy the IPhone 4? To me it isn't. This problem would not occur if you do not handle your IPhone 4 without regard and I'm sure that none of you will because it is a $600 phone that you probably begged your parents to buy for you.

Even though this is not much of a problem, It is still a problem and for you lefties out there, you may purchase a bumper which helps prevent you from gripping the IPhone wrong and losing reception by blocking it a bit. Below are some pictures of the known bumpers.
It can be seen that the IPhone 4 has problems and sadly, the phone will not have a straight 5 win, but instead a 4 - 1 victory. THEREFORE,

WINNER: IPHONE 3GS, FINALLY

CONCLUSION:

The IPhone 4 may have the death grip issue but overall it is a great phone and is recommended to anyone that is able to purchase or upgrade their phones!
